Finding the Best Materials for Your Roof

best time to replace my roof graphic

Most people don’t get super excited when they find out that they have to replace or repair their roofing. When a problem develops, it is something that has to be done, no matter how much you aren’t looking forward to it. A leak-free roof can protect your home and bring more curb appeal to your home! Once you decide that you need a new roof, the next step is to decide what kind of material you want to use.

Some will choose to stick with the material that they already have while others might choose to pick a new kind of roofing material. It is important that you pay attention to how long the material lasts, how much it weighs, and if there are any issues in your structure. If you want an expert, you can always call us today at 603-852-1540 for an estimate!

Roofing Materials for Roof Replacements

There are a variety of materials that can be considered when doing a roofing replacement. Here are some of the most popular materials:

Rolled Roofing

If you have a home that has a low-slope or if you are re-roofing your shed or other out-buildings, a rolled roof might be the best material to choose. This kind of roofing material comes in long rolls of asphalt or mineral-impregnated material and has mineral granules on it. It comes in 3 foot wide and 100 square feet rolls. Here are some reasons to choose rolled roofing:

  •         It comes in large, thin strips.
  •         It’s easy to install.
  •         Inexpensive for roofing that is sloped, such as outdoor buildings or shops.
  •         Works with roofing nails or torch-down method.
  •         It’s sometimes used when the appearance of the roof doesn’t matter.
  •         Costs between $1.50 and $2.50 per square foot.
  •         Can last around 10 years before replacing.

Bur or Built-Up Roofing

BUR roofing is an older option for someone that has a low pitch or a flat roof. This kind of

material is made of different layers of roofing felt that is impregnated with asphalt. When the felt is applied to the material, it will overlap the layers and it makes a barrier that is between 2-4 inches thick. Tar is added to the layers and crushed stone is put in it to make the roof strong. Here are some reasons to choose BUR roofing:

  •         Is made of several layers to keep it durable.
  •         Costs between $2.50 to $5 per square foot.
  •         This material can last between 20-30 years.

Membrane Roofing

If you aren’t fond of the idea of using BUR roofing and you have a low-pitch in your roof, membrane roofing can be chosen instead. When making your choice on the material, EPDM is considered one of the best kinds of membrane roofing to choose because it comes in large sheets, and this takes away some of the seams that can let water in. This is also called “rubber roofing” because of the material it is made from. Here are some of the materials that membrane roofing uses:

  •         Polyvinyl chloride or PVC.
  •         Ethylene propylene diene monomer or EPDM.
  •         Polychloroprene or Neoprene.
  •         Chlorinated polyethylene sheets.
  •         Chlorosulfonated polyethylene sheets.
  •         Polymer-modified bitumen.

Here are some reasons to choose membrane roofing:

  •         Can last from 20 to 35 years.
  •         The material that the roof is made from can be chosen depending on what kind of roofing you want.
  •         Cost ranges from $4.00 to $8.00 per square foot.

Asphalt Composite Shingles

One of the most popular kinds of roofing material in North America is the asphalt composite

shingles. This is a roofing material that is made of fiberglass as the base and then is topped with mineral granules. Here are some reasons to choose asphalt composite shingles:

  •         They can fit almost any kind of home.
  •         Usually have a warranty of 20 to 30 years.
  •         It is easy to replace a shingle if it becomes damaged.
  •         Most roof installers are familiar with installing this kind of roofing.
  •         Composite shingles will move with the roof and can expand when needed.
  •         Cost runs from $1.50 to $4.50 per square foot.
  •         This kind of roofing can last from 12 to 30 years, depending on the quality of the shingles that you choose.

Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Metal roofing has taken off with popularity. The standing seam roof is one of the most common types of metal roofing materials used. This is made out of panels that are steel or aluminum and the seams are raised, and they interlock in order to keep out wetness. Here are some reasons to choose standing seam metal roofing:

  •         It helps to keep foundations safe when living in regions that have a lot of snow.
  •         Protects the home in areas where there is a danger of wildfires because the material is fireproof.
  •         The metal on the roof can be recycled when it is damaged or replaced.
  •         Costs between $6.00 to $12.00 per square foot.
  •         Can last from 30 to 50 and even up to 75 years.

One problem with using this kind of roof is that it takes a special skill in order to install and not all roofing companies will agree to install standing seam metal roofing. Make sure to find out before you hire a contractor for this kind of roof.

Metal Shingles or Metal Shakes

Some people choose not to pick the standing seam metal roofs because they don’t like how they look. But, if you still want to have a metal roof, the metal shingles or shakes roofing can give you a metal roof without the look of the standing seam. This kind of roofing is made of aluminum and steel that is stamped metal with a quality coating. It can also have mineral granules if wanted. Here are some reasons to go with the metal shingles or shakes roofing:

  •         Has a baked on or high-quality coating.
  •         The shingles can be made to look like asphalt shingles, slate tiles, clay tiles or even wooden shakes but with the metal quality.
  •         The price is between $7.00 and $10.00 per square foot.
  •         Can last from 30 to 50 years.

Wood Shingle or Shakes

When you want a roof that is going to look good, wood shingles or shakes will!  The problem is that they don’t have a very long-lasting life and if you live in a place where there is a lot of rain or snow or even wildfires, this might not be the right choice for you.

The wood shingles and shakes are a very popular choice for those that have luxury homes, and they are considered one of the most attractive materials for roofs. Here are some reasons to choose the wood shingle or shakes roofing materials:

  •         They’re made from natural wood, like cedar or redwood.
  •         Often seen on Cape Cod-style homes.
  •         The shingles are a wedge-shaped, thin, piece of wood that comes from sawing.
  •         The shakes are made into thicker wedges that are split wood and have a rough texture.
  •         Wood shingles are between $4.50 and $9.00 per square foot, installed.
  •         Wood shakes can cost between $6.50 and $14.00 per square foot.
  •         Can last 20-60 years, depending on the conditions of the climate. If the wood is used in damp areas, it will not last as long as if it is used in areas that are dry.

Clay Tile

One type of roofing material is clay tiles. This is clay that is taken from the earth and

rolled, molded or made into shapes that interlock. It is then fired so that it can be hard. The color of these is normally a red or orange color and is often left unglazed to have the natural look. This kind of tile can be glazed and fired if looking for a ceramic look. Here are some reasons to choose clay tiles:

  •         They are made of great material if you live in hot climates.
  •         Work great in areas where there is salt in the air.
  •         It’s often seen in the desert regions or in southern coastal regions.
  •         This is an expensive kind of roofing and can run from $10 to $30 dollars per square foot.
  •         It is uncommon to pay $30 dollars per square foot, installed and usually runs at the high end of $18.00 per square foot, installed.
  •         It’s a strong material that can last for up to 100 years.

Concrete Tile

If you want a material that is strong like the clay tile, picking concrete tiles might be perfect

for you. The difference is that you can get the concrete tiles any color or hue that you want. These can look like a variety of things such as rolled clay tiles or even look like wood shakes. You can even choose to get a decorative coating on your concrete tiles. Here are some other reasons to choose concrete tiles:

  •         They work great in areas that have high winds.
  •         It is made of sand-mix concrete, so it is very strong.
  •         Can be made into different kinds of profiles.
  •         Are less expensive than clay tiles running about $10.00 to $15.00 per square foot, installed.
  •         It’s a heavy-duty material that can last up to 50 years or more!

Slate Shingles

One of the nicest looking roofing materials is the slate shingles. This is one of the

choices of homeowners that want their roofing to look its best. Slate roofing has been around for hundreds of years and is still one of the most chosen materials around. Slate roofing is made of real stone sheets that are thin. Here are some reasons to choose slate shingles:

  •       They are easy to carry because they come in thin sheets.
  •       They can cost between $9.00 and $12.00 per square foot, installed.
  •       It can last even up to 200 years.

One problem with choosing slate roofing is that some contractors will not install this kind of roofing because it takes someone that is specialized in installing this kind of material. Always ask before you make your choice or materials.

Synthetic Rubber Slate Tile

Synthetic rubber slate tiles are made of polymers that are recycled of plastic or rubber. Most people cannot tell that these types of roof materials are not natural slate just by looking at it. Here are some reasons to choose synthetic rubber slate tiles:

  •         It looks natural.
  •         It is lightweight and will work on houses that need lighter roofing materials.
  •         It’s not as heavy as natural slate.
  •         Costs between $3.00 to $6.00, plus installation.
  •         Usually comes with a good warranty.
  •         Can last up to 50 years.
